To address these challenges, RESTORE will introduce sustainable by design remanufacturing processes and materials, alongside supporting tools for the digitization of the remanufacturing ecosystem or value chain. RESTORE focuses on advancing promising state-of-the-art cladding technologies, including laser direct energy deposition (DED) and plasma transfer arc (PTA), tailored for sustainable remanufacturing applications. To enhance deposition rates for large-scale applications, the project aims to develop a novel hybrid process combining DED and PTA.

Moreover, RESTORE seeks to produce wire feedstock with recycled content and design a wire feeding system integrated with an auxiliary feeding system to directly transfer machining swarf or unused powder into the melt pool. This innovative approach will pave the way for zero-waste remanufacturing technology at a reduced cost.

The strategic objectives (SO) outlined for RESTORE encompass a comprehensive approach towards sustainable cladding processes, digital automation, and remanufacturing platforms:

• SO1: Emphasizes the development of sustainable cladding processes and consumables, underscoring a commitment to environmental stewardship and resource efficiency.

• SO2: Seeks to leverage digital tools to enhance automation, fostering efficiency and precision in manufacturing operations.

• SO3: Aims to create a RESTORE platform dedicated to remanufacturing, reflecting a dedication to circular economy principles and the reduction of waste.

• SO4: Focuses on scaling innovative business models tailored specifically for remanufacturing, facilitating widespread adoption and impact.

• SO5: Underscores the importance of demonstrating the efficacy of the RESTORE remanufacturing technology solution and platform, showcasing tangible outcomes and paving the way for further advancements in sustainable manufacturing practices. Together, these strategic objectives form a cohesive framework for advancing sustainability, digitalization, and circular economy principles within the manufacturing industry.
